CHAPTER 22

In the lead boat was Tygo, Elle, Hilda, and Aksel Gundersen, their tracker. Just behind them and stroking just as silently was the two huge brothers, Borg and Gunnar Hagen, and joining them was Joren, the sniper. Over his shoulder the man had a large case and sat back with his arms folded and eyes intense and unblinking. He had told them he needed his hands to be undamaged and therefore had refused to row. For whatever reason the two muscular brothers didn’t argue with him as he seemed to give off an aura of danger and unpredictability that made both big men cautious.

Tygo had given Elle the dragon’s eye and she held it before her, the tiny orb directing her forward.

“I can feel it,” she said. “We’re close now.”

“There.” Tygo raised a hand and the boats glided to a stop in the pond still water.

The massive rift in the ice wall seemed to loom out of the thick fog before them. Steam wafted from its entrance, but the man narrowed his eyes and craned forward.

“It looks… smaller,” he said.

“We’re coming to the end of the warm season,” Elle suggested. “Maybe in a few weeks it will have iced over again.” She pointed at a few blocks of ice no bigger than bread loaves floating around them. “They weren’t here last time.”

Tygo grunted. “We don’t have much time.” He was about to wave them on, but paused, and then turned his head slowly, listening.

“Do you hear that?” he asked.

Everyone stayed still and silent. And then they heard it: there was a faint whine, like coming from a giant mosquito.

“What is that?” he asked.

The two boat loads of people looked upwards and turned their heads slowly trying to find the source of the noise. But the mist was far too thick.

“Maybe a big bug from inside,” Elle suggested.

“Say what?” Hilda’s laugh was like a bark that echoed over the still water.

“Shut up,” Tygo growled at her.

After another moment or two the whine receded and then was gone. They sat still as stone for another 30 seconds, before Tygo shook his head.

“Is gone.”

The huge Viking descendent waved them on and began to paddle towards the rift opening in the ice wall. Only Elle sat with her brows drawn together looking back over her shoulder into the billowing mist.
